Javier Milei and his measures, LIVE: Parlasur warned of "setbacks" in rights due to the government's immigration reform.

Mercosur parliamentarian Gabriel Fuks, representing the Union for the Homeland (UxP), recently presented a draft declaration to the Mercosur Parliament in which he expressed his "deep concern" about the immigration reform being pushed by the Argentine government, believing it would entail "a serious setback in terms of human rights and regional integration."

The initiative arose in response to the announcement by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni, who reported that the Executive Branch will move forward with a modification of the immigration regime that would include the application of "new economic requirements and the evaluation of criminal records to access Argentine residency and citizenship."

According to Fuks, the official proposal "puts at risk the free movement of people," one of the principles enshrined in the 1991 Treaty of Asunción and reaffirmed in the Mercosur Citizenship Statute.

He also warned that "any change in this area requires legislative approval by Congress," according to the NA news agency.
